"Same day" is one of the most over-promised phrases in London printing. Some shops mean it literally — drop off by 11am, collect by 5pm. Others mean "we'll start it today and you'll have it tomorrow." Here's how to tell the difference and how to plan a real rush job that doesn't fall apart.

What "same day" really means

Honest London printers offering same-day fall into roughly three categories:

1. The 11am-cutoff shops

Drop off your file (or pick a blank in person) by 11am, collect finished prints by 5pm. Limited to small quantities (typically 1–15 pieces) and proven print methods (DTF, vinyl, sometimes DTG). The 6-hour window covers file prep, printing, pressing, quality check, and packaging. Outside this window, "same day" simply isn't physically achievable.

2. The "rush surcharge" shops

Standard turnaround is 2–5 days, but they'll move your job to the front of the queue for a 50–100% surcharge. Useful for slightly larger same-day runs (15–50 pieces) but only when their schedule actually permits.

3. The "we tried our best" shops

Promise same day, deliver next morning, blame courier. Avoid.

How to plan a real same-day job

Before you contact anyone

• Have a print-ready file (PNG with transparent background or vector PDF/AI)
• Know your exact garment specs (style, colour, sizes, quantities)
• Know your hard collection time (when do you actually need them in your hands?)
• Have a budget you're prepared to spend (rush jobs aren't the time to negotiate)

Calling the printer

• Phone first. Email is too slow for a same-day job.
• Ask three questions: "Can you do it today?", "By what time?", "What does it cost?"
• Get the answer in writing (text or email) before sending money
• Understand collection vs delivery — same-day couriers in London can add £15–30

What can derail a same-day job

• Bad files. Low-resolution, wrong colour mode, missing fonts. Five extra minutes you don't have.

If you can stretch your deadline by 12 hours, your options multiply. Most London printers can do 50–200 pieces overnight if booked by 4pm, often without surcharge. The pressure on you is lower, the print quality is more consistent, and the risk of last-minute disasters drops sharply.

Genuine same-day is for actual emergencies — pop-up brand launches, unscheduled events, last-minute leavers' shirts. For everything else, 24–48 hours gets you the same product without the stress tax.
