Hoodie printing for small businesses: a budget guide.
How small UK businesses actually buy custom hoodies — quantities, blanks, print methods and the realistic per-unit cost at every scale.

Whether you're a five-person agency that wants matching team hoodies or a hospitality group ordering branded staff kit, the maths of small-business hoodie printing is straightforward once you know the variables. Garment + decoration + setup. Get any of those wrong and your invoice doubles.
The three quantity bands that matter
Hoodie printing has three pricing tiers in 2026:
1–10 hoodies (founder kit, small team)
Per-unit price is high (£25–35 each before VAT), but no setup costs and same-day or next-day turnaround. DTF transfer is the standard method. Use this band for: founder photos, first hire kits, small launch events, gifted hoodies for clients or contractors.
10–50 hoodies (event merch, staff kit)
Sweet spot for most small businesses. Per-unit drops to £18–22 each, lead times 3–5 working days. DTF still dominates, but screen printing becomes viable for single-colour designs at the higher end. Use this band for: company-wide staff kit, conference giveaways, Christmas team merch, brand launch runs.
50–100+ hoodies (brand orders, employee gifts)
Per-unit drops to £14–16 each. Screen printing makes sense for simpler designs; setup costs are amortised across the run. Lead times stretch to 7–10 working days. Use this band for: brand merchandising for resale, large team uniforms, conference attendee gifts at scale, recurring orders.
Blank selection: what you're actually paying for
The biggest cost variable in your hoodie isn't the print — it's the hoodie itself. UK options range from £6 to £45 per blank.
| Tier | Examples | Cost (blank) | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Gildan Heavy Blend, Fruit of the Loom Premium | £8–12 | One-time event, large quantity, throwaway use |
| Standard | AWDis JH001, Just Hoods | £12–18 | Most staff kit, conference merch, brand launch |
| Premium | Stanley/Stella Cruiser, AS Colour Stencil | £20–28 | Brand merch for resale, high-end staff gifts |
| Luxury | Champion Reverse Weave, Carhartt | £30–45 | Special founder pieces, anniversary gifts, executive kit |
Choose your blank tier based on what the hoodie says about your brand. A £45 Stanley/Stella with a quality DTF print feels like real merch. A £8 Gildan with the same print feels like a freebie. The print quality is identical; the perception is night and day.
Print method by use case
- Single-colour logo, 50+ hoodies: Screen printing. Cheapest at scale, most durable.
- Multi-colour or gradient logo, any quantity: DTF. Sharp colour, no setup.
- Detailed artwork (illustration, photo): DTF or DTG.
- Sportswear-style numbers and names: Vinyl.
- Embroidered logo (premium feel): Direct embroidery — costs £4–8 per garment but feels much more "real" than printed.
Where to put the print (and why)
- Left chest (small logo). Versatile, professional, affordable. Standard for staff hoodies.
- Centre chest (large logo). Bolder, more brand-forward. Common for streetwear-style company merch.
- Full back (large design). Best for brand storytelling — slogans, illustrations, big logos. Costs more (more print area) but feels intentional.
- Sleeve. Subtle and modern. Often paired with a small chest logo.
- Hood lining. A premium detail. Costs more (specialist work) but unforgettable.
Most small businesses default to chest + back for staff kit. It's familiar, it works, and it photographs well for social media.
Realistic budgets for typical small-business orders
| Use case | Quantity | Budget (ex VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Founder team kit (premium blank, embroidered logo) | 5 | £175–250 |
| 10-person agency merch | 10 | £200–280 |
| Conference giveaway (standard blank, chest print) | 50 | £700–900 |
| Hospitality group staff (standard blank, chest + back) | 100 | £1,400–1,800 |
| Brand merch run (premium blank, full back) | 200 | £3,000–4,000 |
Five things to do before ordering
- Order a sample first. One blank hoodie + one print, exactly what you'd buy at scale. Costs £25–35, saves you £1,000 of regret.
- Confirm sizes properly. UK sizing varies between brands. A "Large" Stanley/Stella is different from a "Large" Gildan. Send a size chart to your team and do a manual count.
- Plan for spares. Always order 5–10% over your real number. New starters, mistakes, the one that gets coffee spilled on it.
- Specify wash care. Tell your team to wash inside-out at 30°C and air-dry. Print survives 50+ washes that way; in a hot tumble dryer, 10–15.
- Get the proof in writing. Digital mockup with exact print position, dimensions, garment colour, ink colours. Approve before production.
